German election: Polls and odds tracker as Merkel seeks fourth term as Chancellor
The German election has entered a final month of campaigning before
the country elects a new Bundestag on 24 September, with Chancellor
Angela Merkel defending her position against Martin Schulz for a fourth term in power.
Polls currently show that Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party
- with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) -
will be the largest party after the election, but they will fall short
of a majority.
This is common in Germany, and
so the resulting parliament is in part determined by how the smaller
parties perform, and which coalition possibilities will be born.
